How did you spend your summer vacation? If you haven’t visited your vacation spot yet do it while the sun is still out. Many people go on vacation to get away from the hustle and bustle of work and business as usual. They are preparing to change their environment to relax and unwind.
Some look at vacations as a luxury; on the contrary, it is a necessity. Vacations improve work-life balance, as you give time to your family and yourself. This is the most important benefit offered by using vacation time. When you’re well rested, you are more focused and more productive. There are no deadlines to meet, no pressure to set alarms, no phones to answer and no reports to send. Vacations also improve overall sleep quality.
Research has shown that one who takes regular vacation feels extremely happy with an overall feeling of well-being compared to those who did not vacation and many reported the feelings last beyond their actual vacation.
As nurses, we need to understand the importance of vacation. Vacations don’t require visiting exotic islands or small get-a-ways on the country side. Some vacations can be, and should be, in your mind. These are very important to the mind, body and soul. The mental stay-cations can be done at the local park, at the library, or in the comfort of your home.
When you take a “stay-cation,” this is NOT the time to paint the house, move furniture or do all the projects that you’ve been meaning to do.
In the field of nursing, we are so busy taking care of everyone else, that we forget to take the time to take care of ourselves. You owe yourself the love that you so freely give to others.
