Life as a Nurse During a Pandemic

The last few months have shown us how important our healthcare workers are. In a time where we were faced with uncertainty, our healthcare workers have stepped up to the plate by providing the best quality care for those who have been affected by this pandemic. Through it all, they have shown us resilience while putting their own lives at risks including their families. So, what can nurses expect and how can they learn from this experience?

Infection Prevention & PPE

Personal protective equipment continues to be the key component in protecting our healthcare workers. Our hospitals have learned the importance of having adequate supplies and resources for their staff. They have come together by following the rules and regulations as advised by health officials and the CDC to make sure their facilities are being cleaned regularly to effectively prevent the spread of the virus.

Nurse Burnout & Compassion Fatigue

This pandemic has certainly pushed our healthcare workers with a heavy workload and our nurses especially have been working double time to provide care for the people in our communities. They have had to deal with the hardships of seeing death daily and even seeing their own coworkers and/or themselves falling victim to the virus.

At the end of the day our nurses are exhausted, so it is important for them to realize when nurse burnout and compassion fatigue are present. Our nurses need to realize when they must step back to take care of themselves for them to be healthy enough to care for others. Read our blog on ways our nurses can help cope with the stress of nursing.

Empathy & Patience

With new regulations placed in hospitals to help prevent the spread of the virus, it is important for our nurses to show empathy and patience. As hard as it is for our healthcare workers it is just as hard on the patients to be laying there without their loved ones by their side.

Chances are our patients are feeling scared and alone not knowing if they will ever get to see their loved ones again. Our nurses need to showcase their strength by showing compassion and finding a way to be there for their patients the best way they can, while still protecting themselves.
